The Painting
the future real bioregion covers the
basalt plain between the mouth of the Yarra river and the Bellarine
Peninsula in south-eastern Victoria, Australia.
The whole bioregion is
within the territory of the indigenous Kulin
nation, but is now home to people
from many different cultural backgrounds. It is divided into the municipalities
of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Wyndham, the City of
Greater Geelong, and the City of Melbourne.
The bioregion includes
the waters of Port Phillip Bay;
the catchment areas of the Yarra, Maribyrnong, Werribee, Little and
Barwon rivers; many streams
including Kororoit Creek; many threatened
natural ecosystems, including grasslands
and internationally significant coastal
wetlands; fertile agricultural
and horticultural land;
and many present-day social challenges, including very high levels
of unemployment, inequitable distribution
of opportunities and resources, and some very unsustainable industrial
and urban development.
For the purposes of this
project, the project area also covers the rest of the state of Victoria,
the rest of Australia and the rest of the world
-- because nature knows no boundaries and nor do the processes of
globalisation.
But what could this bioregion
look like in the future?
